Your phone bill should not require a research project.

But somehow, getting a reasonable price for a service you already use can feel like applying for a mortgage. Let’s make it easier.

1. Look at what you actually use

Open your last two or three bills and check your data usage. If you regularly use 12 GB, paying for 100 GB might not be the bargain it sounds like.

Make sure you’re comparing the same things: nationwide calling, roaming, hotspot access and any features you genuinely need.

2. Check whether you're paying for a phone

Some bills combine your service plan with device financing. If your phone is paid off, make sure the device payments have stopped and compare SIM-only or bring-your-own-phone plans.

3. Look for the little extras

Device protection, extra data packages, international add-ons and other optional features can quietly add up. Cancel what you don’t use, but check the terms before removing anything important.

4. Compare the real monthly price

That eye-catching promotional rate might expire. Check the regular price, discount duration, activation charges, taxes and any conditions such as automatic payments.

A $35 plan that becomes $55 in six months isn’t necessarily better than a straightforward $40 plan.

5. Ask your current provider for a better deal

You don't need a dramatic speech. Tell them what you're paying, mention a comparable offer and ask whether they can match it. Confirm any change in writing before agreeing.

6. Be willing to switch

Sometimes the best offer is from another provider. If you want to keep your number, do not cancel your existing service first. Sign up with the new provider and request a number transfer while your old number is still active.

Check coverage where you live, work and travel. The cheapest plan is expensive if it doesn't work where you need it.

7. Put a reminder in your calendar

Review your bill twice a year, or when a promotional discount ends. Fifteen minutes is enough to spot many avoidable charges. You do not need to become a full-time cell phone plan detective.

Your quick bill check:
  • What am I paying after tax?
  • How much data do I really use?
  • Am I still paying for my device?
  • Which add-ons can I remove?
  • When do my discounts expire?
  • Is there a better plan with coverage I trust?

The Human Mobile take

We think good pricing should be simple, and existing customers shouldn't have to threaten to leave to be treated fairly.

We're building Human Mobile around that idea. We're still early, but we'd love to have you along.
